Chemistry B.S.

The major in chemistry combines a classic liberal arts education with the scientific study of chemistry; providing students with the academic basis for careers in analytical laboratories, biochemistry, forensic science, medicinal chemistry, pharmaceutical chemistry, graduate work and other scientific fields.  Students in the Bachelor of Science in Chemistry may choose to specialize in one of two optional concentrations:  Medicinal and Pharmaceutical chemistry, or Environmental and Analytical Chemistry.

Program Outcomes:

  • Students will be able to explain chemical phenomena and concepts in oral, written, and visual formats that reflect scientific standards and professionalism.
  • Students will be able to independently propose a scientific question, design and execute experimental procedures, and collect and organize data sets.
  • Students will be able to search and evaluate the scientific literature.
  • Students will be able to critically analyze and solve quantitative and conceptual questions.
  • Students will be able to apply the scientic method to answer hypothesis-driven questions.
  • Students will be able to methodically interpret scientific data sets and propose conclusions clearly and effectively.

Students in the Chemistry major must maintain a minimum of C- (70) in all courses required for the major.

 

 

Core Curriculum:


In addition, all students must fulfill the college’s core curriculum  requirements and meet the 128 credit graduation requirement.  The First Year Experience (FYE) Seminar  is a requirement for all first-year students.

CH 406 is strongly recommended.
