NU 451 - Professional Transitions and Informatics


The first six weeks of the course provides an overview of contemporary professional nursing practice with a focus on developing reflective practice through developing and utilizing critical thinking and decision-making skills. The course draws from present literature relating to critical thinking and decision making within complex health care situations.

The last six weeks of the course provides the framework for all stages of the management of health information technologies. As health information systems have become increasingly integral to the provision of quality healthcare services, the need for cohesive, effective health information systems has become critical. Students will learn how to plan, design, and implement systems to meet this need.

Course Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this course, you should be able to:

  • Identify personal, professional, ethical and environmental risks that impact personal and professional choices and behaviors.
  • Identify the ethical and legal issues associated with health information management and how computerization may ameliorate or exacerbate each issue.
  • Apply the unique nursing perspective to interprofessional team communication to optimize patient outcomes.
  • Compare paper-based and computerized health information management systems.
  • Understand the role of the professional nurse in leading change in a changing healthcare environment with an emphasis on patient centered care.
  • Analyze the history of professional nursing and nursing theory as a framework for practice by the baccalaureate prepared nurse.
  • Understand the role of interprofessional partnerships in providing quality care to patients, families and communities.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and skills in precepting/mentoring nurses and nursing students.
  • Assimilate the core components of health information management systems and how they are integrated.
  • Uses critical thinking tactics in nursing care and professional interactions.
  • Analyze how health information systems may be used strategically to improve health care outcomes and efficiency.
