PY 301 - Personality Theory


Critically examines the major theoretical approaches to understanding personality, including the works of Freud, Jung, Skinner, Maslow, and Rogers. Methods of assessment such as self-report and projective testing are discussed. The theories, methodology, and research results pertinent to a number of topics in the psychology of personality are addressed.

Course Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this course, you should be able to:

  • Describe the basic philosophical assumptions that lie behind the formation of personality theories.
  • Apply your understanding of the psychoanalytic and neopsychoanalytic theoretical views to a case study.
  • Explain the concepts of Erik Erikson, Anna Freud, and Dan McAdams.
  • Describe the influences of the object relation theorists on understanding personality development.
  • Distinguish between the various aspects of experimental analysis of behavior and the key theorists behind experimental psychology, such as classical and operant conditioning.
  • Describe the strengths and weaknesses and apply the social theories of Albert Bandura, Julian Rotter, and Walter Mischel.
  • Apply your understanding of dispositional and learning theories through interaction with a genogram.
  • Develop a working understanding of the humanistic and existential theories and how these can and cannot aid in human development.
  • Apply your understanding of George Kelly’s cognitive behavioral theories and the REP Test.
  • Identify the strengths and weaknesses of cognitive behavioral theories with application to a real-life situation.
