TH 560 - Ministry with the Aging, Sick and Dying


This course explores the biblical, theological, psychological, and pastoral challenges of ministry with the aging, sick, and dying. It examines the meaning of sickness and death in the Christian tradition. It treats ministry within a Catholic theology of Church and grace in service to the people of God.

Course Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this course, you should be able to do the following: 

  • Appreciate the Church’s theology of suffering and its healing ministry. 
  • Articulate a theology of pastoral care consistent with that held by the Church. 
  • Demonstrate successful pastoral listening skills and the use of verbatim and ritual. 
  • Apply and communicate how the sacraments of reconciliation and anointing of the sick are part of God’s economy of salvation and how they can be sensitively applied in various pastoral environments. 
  • Demonstrate the use of the rite for pastoral care of the sick and dying as applied to various environments. 
  • Discuss the issues of illness, aging, and death in America, and the role of the Church and pastoral minister in addressing these issues.
