NU 604 - Applied Financial Management and Budgeting


Explores financial management concepts and other resources in health care delivery systems with emphasis on the manager’s role and responsibilities in budgeting, monitoring, controlling, and costing of nursing care. The impact of reimbursement systems and managed care on resource allocation and utilization are examined.

Course Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this course, you should be able to do the following: 

  • Describe the nurse manager’s role in assessing, planning for, and controlling financial resources and the impact on the patient, nursing role and the health-care facility. 
  • Discuss how financial management fits into the delivery of patient services within the health-care organization. 
  • Use financial information in decision making in nursing within health-care organizations. 
  • Apply budgetary planning, assessment, and evaluation of financial resources to a nursing/health-related department in a health-care setting. 
  • Apply cost and budgeting concepts to a nursing and /or health-care setting. 
  • Evaluate the nurse manager and/or leader role in managing financial resources in a health-care setting. 
  • Apply concepts and research knowledge to interpret the impact of the changing health-care environment on the practice of providing high-quality care in a cost-effective manner.
  • Analyze the future roles of nurse leaders and managers in relation to financial management within an organization.
