NU 501 - Nursing Informatics


Builds knowledge and skills essential for the use of computerized systems as tools in nursing and health care. Course content includes application of information technology in nursing practice, education, and administration with emphasis on accessing and evaluating available resources, computer use in organizing and manipulating information, and use of technology in teaching-learning environments.

Prerequisites & Notes
Basic skills in two of the three following programs: word processing, database management or spread sheets.

Course Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this course, you should be able to do the following:

  • Discuss basic terms and components related to computer hardware and software and their use.
  • Demonstrate basic computer concepts and use of information-systems terminology.
  • Demonstrate the use of online-research programs and search engines to evaluate and utilize online information.
  • Assemble a presentation using common personal-computer applications to communicate effectively.
  • Describe the role and scope of practice of the Informatics Nurse Specialist and the nurse as a knowledge worker.
  • Discuss technology and nursing informatics that impact health care and decision support.
  • Describe components of a health-care-information system and how they are integrated.
  • Discuss the use of technology for e-health applications and telehealth.
  • Describe the importance of data integrity and use of standardized terminology and its application to the electronic patient record.
  • Employ informatics to implement a technology into practice.
