NP 603 - Advanced Pathophysiology


Builds on undergraduate pathophysiology and demonstrates the interrelationships between physiology and pathology. There is a pathogenesis of a disease, and the relationships between the pathogenesis of a disease process and its effect on the physiology of a system manifest the disease in a manner that allows for sign and symptom recognition, which then allows for diagnosis and treatment.But one system is never affected alone, and the interrelationship between various physiological systems and their role in the pathogenesis of a disease is part of what will be focused on in this course.In addition, many patients have co-morbidity’s, and the effects of those diseases on each other affect the pathogenesis of a disease process on one or each of them.

Course Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this course, you should be able to do the following:

  • Integrate, at an advanced level with professional colleagues, the causes and relationships of various pathological states and their effects on the disease process’s at a level of competency defined by the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties (NONPF) Domains and Core Competencies. 
  • Justify, among colleagues and third-party reimbursement insurers, the necessity and appropriateness of various diagnostic tests and treatment options. 
  • Recognize a patients clinical presentations of signs and symptoms and integrate pathophysiological concepts. 
  • Understand and be able to articulate the pathogenesis of a patients disease. 
  • Answer a patients questions regarding his/her disease process. 
  • Assimilate data to make an appropriate judgment as to whether further diagnostic testing, consultation, or referral is needed based on a patients presentation. 
  • Articulate the interrelationships and physiologic effects of patient comorbidities. 
  • Apply evidence-based research about pathophysiology and pathogenesis of a disease to patient treatment. 
  • Integrate the sequelae associated with various pathologies. 
  • Reason through different human pathologies.
