Philosophy B.A.

The Philosophy major allows students to study philosophical issues in their historical contexts. Course highlights include human nature and ethics, metaphysics, philosophy of knowledge, and the moral self. Additionally, the philosophy major includes two semesters of the same foreign language and requires the additional completion of a 20-credit minor in another academic field.

Completing this degree program will provide students with:

  • Basic Knowledge: Understanding the essential questions surrounding human life that have shaped the course of Western civilization.
  • Truth and Values: Discovering fundamental truths and values which give meaning to one’s life.
  • Effective Communication: Improving the ability to write effectively.
  • Critical Thinking: Improving critical thinking skills.
  • Career Preparation: Providing the knowledge and skills necessary for success in graduate study in philosophy or any other discipline (such as law) that requires similar skills.

Note


Transfer credit for PH 200 must be approved by the Chair of the Department. Credit will only be given for courses which sufficiently match the content of PH 200.

Students majoring in Philosophy are required to complete a 20-credit minor in another academic field. Students planning to pursue graduate studies in Philosophy are encouraged to take the historical sequence (PH222, PH213, PH214).
