ED 551 - Educational Ethics


In this course, practicing educators explore the complex moral and ethical dilemmas inherent in educational settings. Grounded in a commitment to intentional teaching and the “teacher-as-researcher” model, this course provides practical frameworks for evaluating the ethical implications of pedagogical choices, school policies, and student assessments. This course invites educators to critically examine ethical problems through real-world scenarios, which include the topics of artificial intelligence as it applies to the field of education, the examination of ethical principles that guide relationships involving students, their families, colleagues and community stakeholders, and the active reflection upon and formulation of  approaches that foster ethical decision-making in learning environments.

Course Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this course, you should be able to do the following:

  • Analyze established ethical theories related to complex, real-world educational dilemmas and professional practices.
  • Critique the ethical implications inherent in various instructional strategies, curricular decision-making, assessment models, learning environments, stakeholder relationships, and school culture.
  • Identify and manage the ethical considerations required when using and applying emerging technological tools, specifically artificial intelligence in Education
  • Formulate well-reasoned, ethical judgments regarding complex practical problems related to the field of education,
  • Reflect upon applying ethical principles and practices in working and communicating with with colleagues, students, families, and school-community members
  • Engage in critical, ongoing self-reflection, identifying implicit biases and fostering continuous professional growth in ethical decision-making.
