NU 491 - Introduction to Professional Writing, Evidence-Based Practice and Statistics


This course focuses on an introduction to professional writing, evidence based practice and statistics that are found in research. Students gain a beginning understanding of the research process, how to read research critically, and the ability to understand and evaluate quantitative, qualitative, and research outcomes. In addition, students will learn to summarize research evidence to make changes in practice through professional writing and applying statistics.

Course Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this course, you should be able to do the following:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the basic elements of the research process and models for applying evidence to clinical practice.
  • Advocate for the ethical protection of human subjects in the conduct of research.
  • Evaluate the credibility of sources of information, including but not limited to databases and Internet resources.
  • Participate in the process of retrieval, appraisal, and synthesis of evidence in collaboration with other members of the healthcare team to improve patient outcomes.
  • Explain the use of statistical data to support research and changes in nursing practice.
  • Display professional writing skills in communication with other members of the healthcare team.
