TH 533 - Religious Education in Theory and Practice (SF)


The theories and practices of religious education will be explored through the lenses of theological pedagogy that focuses on the deepening of spirituality through experience and knowledge. The course will present curricula used in religious education classrooms as well as practical applications to the practice of teaching, reaching, and preaching the Word of God in theory and practice.

This is a Sustainability-Focused (SF)  course.

Course Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this course, you should be able to:

  • Applying theory and practice of theology in a classroom setting for grades K-8.
  • Plan and devise a structured learning program in RE, showing a mastery of the concepts, substance and structure of the relevant RE curriculum and assessment principles.
  • Adapting practices of theological principles in adapting to the five step method of religious education lesson planning (Learn, Meditate, Pray, Contemplate, and Act) in the classroom.
  • Examining curricula and lesson plans using the model of evangelizing catechesis.
  • Forming Christian disciples in the classroom by implementing activities and projects that engage the student using a model of engagement and practice.
  • Setting goals for each religious education lesson using the structure of the interior, cognitive, and behavioral development of the learner.
  • Fostering growth within the student by effectively using models of proclamation of scripture through praxis.
