TH 532 - Isaiah and the Catholic Church


This course first examines the book of Isaiah in its ancient Hebrew cultural, political, literary, and theological contexts, then proceeds to analyze its contribution to New Testament Christology and to Catholic liturgical expression during the season of Advent. It concludes with the passages of Isaiah and how it pertains to Catholic Social Teachings.

Course Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this course, you should be able to:

  • Evaluate the book of Isaiah in terms of Ancient Near Eastern and Hebrew historical, cultural, and religious contexts. 
  • Analyze the formative contribution and interpretation of the book of Isaiah to the New Testament its relevance to Christology. 
  • Synthesize the aspects above with a creative appreciation of the book of Isaiah’s contribution to the Christian liturgical season of Advent. 
  • Research the contributions of the prophets listed in the Old Testament and the significance the writings of Isaiah have within the New Testament.
  • Compare and contrast the announcement of the prophet Isaiah “learn to do good; seek justice, rescue the oppressed, defend the orphan, plead for the widow” (1:17) with the seven principles of Catholic Social teachings.
