TH 324 - Truth, Reconciliation, and Transformation


The course “Truth, Reconciliation and Transformation” seeks to educate people about the criminal justice systems, unfair labor practices, and systematic acceptance of abuse that can cause corruption within society and why the Catholic Social Teachings and the Sacrament of Reconciliation can be a means in healing past trauma caused by the injustice.

This course also  seeks to address the choices and decisions regarding the policies, procedures, the criminal justice system and how the Church can  attempt to address past human rights abuses, concerns over reconciliation, and the socio-political and religious institutional challenges regarding Catholic Social Teachings and its implications within our lives in the world.

Course Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this course, you should be able to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of Catholic Social Teachings and its effects on policy making, advocacy, and systemic change.
  • Discuss the issues regarding reconciliation, truth, and transformation and its implications within the Church and in the secular world.
  • Explain the definitions and perspectives of reconciliation and how the Catholic Church can use the Sacrament of Reconciliation as a means for healing.
  • Examine the socio-political causes of racial injustices in the criminal justice system. 
  • Explain the seven key elements of Catholic Social teachings and how each element applies to societal systematic change.
  • Integrate the understanding of CST and the impact of the teachings for serving the marginalized in our world. 
  • Maintaining and understanding how community outreach to the marginalized is a part of imperatives as faithful people. 
  • Provide an end of term project using the learned material and establishing a program that will assist the underserved populations in institutional systems.
