TH 208 - Sacraments of Initiation


Since 1984, persons inquiring about becoming a Catholic are invited to participate in a process known as Order of Christian Initiation for Adults (OCIA). This course will provide the materials, resources, and reasoning for each rite, ritual, and sacrament for this process. Students will participate as a fictional candidate, catechumen, or sponsor throughout the course as a means to learn first hand the process and the procedures for the OCIA.

Course Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this course, you should be able to:

  • Role Play as an active participant in the Order of Christian Initiation for Adults.
  • Apply the teachings of the early Christians with the practices being used in the current model used by the Catholic Church for new Christians and persons requiring full participation in the Catholic Church.
  • Analyze the rules, policies, and laws of the Catholic Church as it pertains to the Order of Christian Initiation for Adults.
  • Explain the importance of the three sacraments of initiation (Baptism, Eucharist, and Confirmation).
  • Plan and implement an Order of Christian Initiation process at a parish or diocese.
