ED 546 - Action Research Design


This course provides an applied introduction to the principles and practices of educational action research, specifically designed to support students in the planning and constructing of their graduate action research project. The course emphasizes the cyclical nature of action research, empowering educators to systematically examine and improve their own practice within their unique educational settings. Students will gain a thorough understanding of the action research methodology and acquire the essential skills to investigate their research question, complete a literature review, and design an action research study. By the close of this course, students will apply for IRB approval and prepare to conduct their action research project in the capstone thesis course ED 600 Research Project.

Prerequisites & Notes
ED 520, enrolled in the MSEd Healthcare Educator Track, or with permission by the Program Director.

Course Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this course, you should be able to do the following:

  • Confirm a researchable question that will guide their action research project.
  • Identify the process, application, and analysis of the educational action research method.
  • Delineate and describe the framework for educational action research.
  • Augment skills in interpretation and analysis of academic journal articles.
  • Demonstrate the use and application of standard research writing and citations.
  • Describe the role and purpose of a literature review in action research.
  • Complete an appropriate literature review that supports a research question.
  • Describe the action research method of collecting and analyzing data, arranging for participants and tools for measurement and/or inquiry and connect these methods to design the methodological steps to support a research question.
  • Complete both the required HHR Training  with certificate, and the IRB application in preparation for IRB approval.
