SW 320 - Spiritual Diversity in Social Work


This course provides a framework for social work students to understand and explore the spiritual dimension of a person’s identity in the context of social work practice. Rooted in the principles of cultural sensitivity, this course equips students to understand spiritual/religious diversity as a key component of a person’s identity. Students will explore the impact of spiritual/religious issues on various elements of identity including self-image, social belonging, and cultural worldview. Students will explore ways to promote sensitive and anti-oppressive engagement with this holistic understanding of identity.

Co-Requisite or prerequisite:  SW 101 Introduction to the Profession of Social Work

Course Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this course, you should be able to do the following:

  3. Examine spiritual/religious identity in the context of oppression and social justice.
  4. Develop a framework to explore the potential life-affirming and life-limiting impacts of spiritual/religious identity.
  5. Engage with ethical considerations regarding the spiritual/religious identities of social workers and their clients.
