NU 105 - Introduction to Professional Nursing


This course introduces students to the nursing profession and contemporary healthcare.  Students examine nursing as a profession and a career with a focus on core healthcare professional competencies.  The core competencies of a patient-centered care; teamwork and collaboration; evidence-based practice; quality improvement; safety, and informatics are explored in relation to nursing.

Course Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to do the following:

  • Demonstrate an appreciation of the history of and contemporary issues in nursing and their impact on current nursing practice.
  • Demonstrate an awareness of complex organizational systems.
  • Describe the interrelationships among theory, practice, and research.
  • Demonstrate effective communication techniques.
  • Describe inter- and intraprofessional communication and collaborative skills including negotiation and conflict resolution.
  • Explain the role of the nurse in assessing the health/illness beliefs, values, attitude, and practices of individuals families, groups, communities, and populations.
  • Identify and discuss the professional standards of moral, ethical, and legal conduct for professional nurses.
  • Explore telecommunication technologies to assist in effective communication in a variety of healthcare settings.
  • Discuss the impact of socio-cultural, economic, legal, and political factors that influence healthcare delivery and nursing practice.
  • Assume responsibility for personal and professional behaviors.
