NP 600 - The Advanced Practice Nurse as Provider


This course is designed for students who anticipate delivering patient care in the advanced practice nurse practitioner role. Students will investigate issues that are pertinent to the nurse practitioner role to include: licensure, certification, scope of practice and prescriptive authority. Ethical and legislative issues affecting prescriptive authority for the nurse practitioner will be addressed including controlled substances. Statutory authority for prescription writing protocols are examined within the course.

  • Understand the role and responsibility of the advanced practice nurse in prescribing and managing pharmacological therapy as a part of safe clinical practice.
  • Discuss state regulation as it applies to advanced practice nurses and prescriptive authority.
  • Analyze state licensure requirements and national certification as a part of safe clinical practice.
  • Recognize and address issues of substance abuse into safe clinical practice.
  • Demonstrate understanding of the components of a prescription as it relates to safe practice.
