TH 555 - Survey of the Old Testament


An introduction to the books and significant passages of the Old Testament, to the historical and religious background of its text, to the study of the methods of its interpretation, and to Catholic teaching on the Old Testament as sacred text.

Course Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this course, you should be able to:

  • Evaluate the connections among the history (major time periods), literature (genres), and theologies of the Old Testament, as well as ancient, medieval and modern methods for studying them.
  • Synthesize the meanings of these ancient Israelite sacred texts by learning to discriminate among the literary, social, and religious dimensions of the texts.
  • Create “close readings” of particular passages in the Old Testament, with special attention to genre, using relevant secondary sources.
  • Evaluate the relationship between these ancient Jewish writings and the Catholic conception of them as canon.
  • Display critical thinking and communication skills through formal writing assignments and discussion opportunities.
