TH 505 - Foundations of Moral Theology


This course examines the basic principles of Catholic moral theology. Incorporating Sacred Scripture, Tradition, and Magisterial teaching, it rationally addresses the elements of freedom, conscience, conversion, natural law, and virtues, in light of charity and beauty as fundamental moral norms and criteria for ethical judgment.

Course Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this course, you should be able to:

  • Trace the elements of Catholic Moral theology to Sacred Scripture and authoritative texts, the Church Fathers, and liturgical living including worship.
  • Comprehend and articulate an authentic view of the human person as created imago dei.
  • Evaluating morality as the pursuit of an authentic good of the human person, as a pilgrimage towards ultimate happiness sustained by grace.
  • Identify and engage the issues of moral theology in society, by synthesizing a nuanced response to contemporary issues facing the people of God in the modern world.
  • Comprehend and apply terms in context specific to moral theology, such as happiness, the human person, virtue and the moral act, freedom and law, grace and conscience, nuptial mystery,  justice and the new law, along with the role of beauty.
