TH 211 - Christian Spirituality


This course examines how Christian values and spiritual practices reflect an understanding of God, human identity, and the material world as the context for spiritual transformation. Students will explore the wisdom, practices, and paths of prominent Christian spiritual traditions as a means of developing and living a deeply Christian spiritual life to enhance one’s faith and relationships.

Course Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this course, you should be able to:

  • Analyze the characteristics and the recurrent themes of the Christian spiritual tradition to include those characteristics unique to Catholic spirituality.
  • Distinguish between the roles of prayer, mediation, and contemplation within Christian spirituality as well as how mysticism functions.
  • Explain the history, characteristics, and spiritual practices of several major traditions of Christian spirituality.
  • Assess the value of various Christian spiritual traditions to enhance one’s relationship with God and others.
  • Experience personal application of several spiritual tools and reflect on those experiences.
