ED 572 - Catholic Mission and Identity


This course describes how the most mission-driven, program effective, well managed, and responsibly governed Catholic schools operate.  Using the 2024 National Standards and Benchmarks for Effective Catholic Elementary and Secondary Schools (NSBECS) as a framework, the course explores the defining characteristics of Catholic schools, Catholic identity, evangelization, the teaching mission of the Catholic Church, spiritual leadership, institutional leadership, governance, and qualified leadership.

Course Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this course, you should be able to do the following:

  • Mission and Catholic Identity (NSBECS Standards 1-4).  Students will be able to articulate how an excellent Catholic school is driven and guided by a clearly communicated mission that embraces Catholic identity that includes gospel values, a focus on the Eucharist and a commitment to communal and  adult faith formation, academic excellence that integrates religious education and catechesis in the Catholic faith within a total academic curriculum that integrates faith, culture and life, missionary discipleship and service.
  • Governance and Leadership (MSBECSStandards 5-6).  Students will identify the characteristics of a governing body that exercises responsible decision-making in collaboration with the school leadership in fidelity to the school’s mission, vision, academic excellence and operational vitality.
  • Academic Excellence (NSBECS Standards 7-9).  Students will be able to identify and assess what constitutes a clearly articulated, religious curriculum aligned with professionally accepted, research-based curriculum standards and gospel values implemented through effective instruction.
  • Operational Vitality (NSBECS Standards 10-13).  Students will be able to identify the factors necessary to insure the operational vitality of the Catholic school, including the development and implementation of a comprehensive strategy for institutional development based on a compelling mission through communications, marketing, enrollment management and development.
