TH 550 - Foundations in Catholic Theology


This course, which is the ordinary first course for the graduate Theology programs, introduces the beginning student to the fundamental dimensions and parameters of Catholic doctrine and theology as outlined and summarized in the Creeds of the Church, particularly the Apostles’ Creed and the Nicene-Constantinopolitan Creed, which are rooted in the teaching of the early Church and in the writings of the New Testament.

Course Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Understand the historical development of the three articles of the Apostles’ Creed and of the Nicene-Constantinopolitan Creed. 
  • Explain the Trinitarian and Christological basis for the three articles of the Creeds. 
  • Explain the Creeds’ teaching on the Father. 
  • Explain the Creeds’ teaching on the Son.
  • Explain the Creeds’ teaching on the Holy Spirit.
  • Explain the Creeds’ teaching on the Church, the Resurrection, and Everlasting Life
  • Explain how the structure of the two Creeds informs the outline of Part 1 of the Catechism of the Catholic Church.
