NP 618 - Womens Health Theory and Practice


This course provides a problem-based case approach to explore the theories and practice of health care for women, within the context of family health care in concordance with nationally recognized FNP competencies. The course is designed to provide experience with assessment, diagnosis, planning, and management of women for health promotion, minor acute conditions, wellness visits and pregnancy.

This course consists of two components, a clinical practicum (100-120 hours with an approved preceptor) and an online seminar. In this course the student will apply course content of women’s health theory to the care of women in the context of family, including refining skills in the performance of a comprehensive health status assessment, development of differential diagnoses, planning, health promotion and care management of patients with stable chronic and minor acute health issues.

Pre-requisites:  NP 612 and NP 613

Co-requisite:  can be taken with or before NP 619

Course Learning Objectives
The course learning outcomes are:

  • Uses ethical principles when making decisions based on the patient visit (MSN Essential I)
  • Discuss health care of women, infants and children incorporating ethical, legal, cultural, economic, political and psychosocial principles. (MSN Essential III, IX)
  • Demonstrate appropriate and effective oral and written communication withwomen of childbearing age, their families, and other health care professionals. (MSN Essential II, VII)
  • Integrates teaching and learning principles and environmental data in providing culturally humble care and developing the role of the family nurse practitioner as health educator. (MSN Essential VIII, IX)
  • Illustrate the elements of developmentally appropriate comprehensive and focused health histories and physical examinations for women of child bearing age (MSN Essential IV, IX)
  • Use current research related to diagnostic and treatment protocols to improve the delivery of health care to women of child bearing age (MSN Essential IV, IX)
  • Interpret the effectiveness of interventions and care management strategies in improving the health status of individuals. (MSN Essential VI, IX)
  • Use the principles of human growth and development in the assessment, plan and treatment of women of childbearing age (MSN Essential IV, IX)
  • Apply research, adaptation and related theories to develop management plans for health promotion, disease prevention, and stable chronic illnesses for women of child bearing age (MSN Essential IV, IX)
