TH 505 - Catholic Moral Theology


This course examines the basic principles of Catholic moral theology. It focuses on the roles of scripture, tradition, and the magisterium in ethical decision making and explores the following themes: freedom, conscience, sin and conversion, natural law, virtues, and moral norms as criteria for ethical judgment.

Course Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this course, you should be able to do the following: 

  • Explain how Christ reveals man to himself, made in God’s image, and how the body expresses this image; 
  • Answer the basic human questions, “How does one attain freedom and happiness?”
  • Delineate and elaborate upon the moral operation of a human act, as well as methods that help discern correct course of action in complex moral situations;
  • Explain the intrinsic relationship between morality and grace;
  • Apply moral reasoning to analyze current prominent moral/bioethical issue, showing the intrinsic connection between moral theology and Catholic Social Theology.
