RN to BSN Program

Purpose and Program Objectives

The Bachelor of Science in Nursing program for RNs is flexible and responsive to previous learning and life experiences. The goal is to enhance nursing practice as well as to create a foundation for graduate study. Graduates assume appropriate responsibilities in the context of further professional development and participate in continuing education and graduate study. Graduates of the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program:

  • think critically when collecting, organizing, and synthesizing information to guide nursing practice;
  • provide safe, effective, culturally sensitive, holistic care to individuals, families, groups, or communities to promote, maintain, and restore optimal health throughout the life cycle;
  • promote health through use of the teaching/learning process in nursing practice;
  • communicate thoughts, perceptions, and ideas through verbal, nonverbal, and written form;
  • assist others toward goal attainment through use of leadership skills;
  • base professional actions on moral, ethical, legal, and Christian Humanistic principles and;
  • improve health for individuals, groups, or communities through application of research findings.

Required Courses


Students enrolled in the BSN program must complete 129 credits, consisting of liberal arts, science, and nursing credits. These credits can be earned through a combination of transfer credits, earned credits, and challenge exams. RNs who graduated from state-approved ADN and diploma programs will be eligible for up to 30 transfer credits in nursing based upon transcript assessment for congruency with Department of Nursing requirements.

Note:  NU421 approved Elective must be a course at the upper division level and should not be a transfer of previously earned credits.  The intent is that students can explore an area of knowledge that has relevance to their program of study and they will synthesize this new knowledge with recently learned knowledge and skills.

25% of total credits must be earned from Saint Joseph’s, 18 of which must be in nursing to meet graduation requirements.

Progression


Students enrolled in the nursing major must follow the prescribed curriculum sequence. All 200 and 300-level nursing courses must be completed before enrolling in 400-level courses. Students who receive less than a C grade (73) in a nursing course, or less than a C- (70) in related science, sociology, or psychology courses, may not progress to subsequent courses until a grade of 73 or above is achieved. Students may take a required nursing or science course twice. Students who receive less than a C grade (73) twice for the same nursing course, or less than a C- (70) twice for the same required science course, or who have not received an acceptable transfer grade, will be required to withdraw from the nursing major.

Summer Program


Seminar in Professional Nursing (NU 305) is a required nursing curriculum course and is only offered in the Summer Program. This course should be taken early in the program of study so that students may progress to 400-level nursing courses. NU 300 Professional Transitions is the prerequisite for this course.

Additional Admission Requirements


All students applying to and currently enrolled in the RN to BSN and RN to MSN programs must:

  • Hold a valid United States unencumbered RN License.
  • Possess the functional abilities to perform the skills and behaviors required of a professional nurse. Therefore, all nursing students must possess the following functional abilities:
    1. Ability to see, hear, touch, smell and distinguish colors.
    2. Communicate orally and in writing with clarity, accuracy and efficiency.
    3. Manual dexterity with gross and fine movements.
    4. Think critically, analyze, assess, solve problems, and make judgments.
    5. Emotional stability and ability to accept responsibility and accountability. American Association of Colleges of Nursing. (2000). International applicants educated in countries other than the United States must contact the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools (COGFNS) for credentialing at: Commission of Foreign Nursing Schools, 3600 Market Street, Suite 400, Philadelphia, PA 19104-2651 USA. Applicant Inquiries: 215-349-8767. Graduates of foreign nursing schools must submit an official report from the COGFNS.

In addition to the prior educational/work credentials, applicants must submit:

  1. Copy (front and back) of current unencumbered registered nurse license.
  2. Résumé or work history for the last ten years.
