Accounting Certificate Program

This certificate is for students interested in developing the skills and knowledge to enter the accounting profession from any starting point and to prepare for a career in the public accounting profession.The certificate is available to
- Working professionals and other non-degree students without a bachelor’s degree (just starting UG studies at SJC).
- Students enrolled in the undergraduate business administration program at SJC (BSBA Degree).
- Students who already possess an undergraduate degree in any major, from any institution (Any Bachelor’s Degree).
The certificate meets the curricular requirements for State of CPA Maine Licensure.
Note that a graduate degree is not needed to meet the 150 academic hours licensure requirement and that the actual accounting credits hours required varies by state. A certificate that consists of 30 academic credit hours over and above the typical 120 credits hours required at the bachelor’s degree level will meet the requirement in many cases.
It can also serve as a foundation for advanced graduate level finance and accounting elective courses in the Master of Business Administration in Accounting program.
Certificate Program Outcomes:
- Acquire knowledge and competencies within the accounting profession.
- Demonstrate critical writing, thinking, calculating, and communication proficiencies.
- Understand the foundation of ethical and professional standards including those specific to the field of accounting
- Satisfy the academic subject requirements for the State of Maine

- Obtain credential that will lead to employment or advancement in the accounting profession.
- Develop the foundation needed for a graduate degree in accounting.

Admission Requirements
As a credit bearing certificate program, students are expected to adhere to SJC’s undergraduate GPA requirements. For those seeking to apply to the Master of Business Administration in Accounting , a minimum grade of “C,” or better is required in each course.
The 18-credit undergraduate program provides participants with courses transferable to the Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (BSBA) and other degree options available through Saint Joseph’s College. Twelve of the required 18 credits must be completed through Saint Joseph’s College.
In some cases, professional experience will be considered. Please have official transcripts forwarded directly to Saint Joseph’s College (attn: Online Registrar’s Office) for transfer credit review.

The Accounting Certificate is offered 100% online and includes six 3-credit courses. Each course is delivered over a 10-week term. Time to completion will depend on the specific coursework required and prerequisite requirements. If all courses are required, at the rate of two courses per term, the certificate can be completed in 10 months.
