TH 335 - Introduction to Catholic Social Teaching


This course introduces students to the Scriptural and Traditional foundations of Catholic Social Teaching. It provides a survey of the Seven Major Themes of CST and examines how those themes shape the Church’s position on a wide variety of contemporary social concerns and ethical issues. It explores the lives of Christian witnesses who exemplify these teachings in action. And it provides students the opportunity to develop and personally demonstrate applications of CST in their own lives and communities.

Course Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Identify each of the 7 themes of Catholic Social Teaching and explain what each theme means.
  • Relate examples of each theme’s basis in Scripture and prevalence within the Roman Catholic Tradition.
  • Provide examples of individuals whose lives are faithful models of CST in action.
  • Compare and contrast CSTs to some of the prevailing tendencies within our culture.
  • Develop and demonstrate the practical applications of CST in our world today.
