HPS 330 - History of Epidemics

This course examines the history of how human societies have been challenged by epidemic diseases over time and how they have understood/confronted this challenge socially, politically, economically, and culturally.

Prerequisite/Corequisite
Prerequisite(s): HPS 104

Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, you should be able to do the following:

  • Recognize major epidemics throughout history, as well as key historical persons and events in the history of epidemiology.
  • Explain Galenic theories of health, illness, and epidemics, as well as major competing theories of health/contagion/germs/virology.
  • Evaluate past communities’ political, social, economic, and cultural struggles with and reactions to epidemic disease.
  • Assess connections between past epidemics, public health, and the experience of dealing with epidemic diseases today.
  • Analyze & interpret both primary and secondary historical sources by critically evaluating and analyzing their contents.
  • Communicate historical analyses effectively in writing & discussion.
