HP 250 - Sustainability of Global Citizenship


Credits: 4

This course examines global history through the lens of one of the most important documents of modern times: the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Emphasis is also placed on the ongoing importance of the UDHR for global citizenship in the twenty-first century.

Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, you should be able to do the following:

  • Understand important historical developments in modern global history (including, most specifically, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights) and explain their significance.
  • Evaluate the relationships between major trends in global current events (like the UDHR) and their historical influences.
  • Interpret both primary (like the UDHR) and secondary historical sources by critically evaluating and analyzing their contents.
  • Employ main models of historical analysis like continuity vs. change, multiple causality, context, and comparison/contrast.
  • Analyze modern historical developments by understanding and utilizing the 4 main subcategories [or themes] within historical studies: a) Social History; b) Political History; c) Economic History; and d) Cultural History.
  • Communicate historical analyses effectively in writing & discussion.
  • Consider the ramifications of the concept of universal human rights and the United Nations’ UDHR on the student’s chosen professional field.
  • Evaluate the advantages and the challenges involving the concept of universal human rights for diverse global cultures, societies, religions, and belief systems in the 21st century.
