EH 101 - College Writing


Credits: 3

Designed to improve students’ writing skills by means of an increased understanding and appreciation of written language. Students write a variety of compositions, including formal essays; study grammar; and explore the interrelationships among persuasive writing, thinking, and speaking.

Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, you should be able to do the following:

  • Develop and demonstrate good communication skills in writing and speech.
    • Identify and describe components of clear, error-free Standard Written English.
    • Show consistent control of grammar and syntax.
    • Address assignments clearly and analytically, setting a meaningful task.
  • Identify valid peer-reviewed and, where appropriate, other academically-valid secondary sources.
  • Synthesize and integrate information from valid secondary sources where appropriate.
  • Navigate and complete a Documented Essay.
    • Establish a clearly-focused controlling idea.
    • Demonstrate a sense of purpose and audience awareness.
    • Demonstrate a clear and coherent organization.
    • Make effective connections between ideas.
    • Synthesize and integrate appropriate information from valid secondary sources.
  • Collaborate effectively with fellow students and instructor in peer-review sessions.
  • Work collaboratively with fellow students on in-class assignments.
  • Make and explain connections between skills learned and/or developed in the course and one’s chosen professional field.
  • Explore and describe ways in which skills learned and/or developed in the course can lead to establishing networking opportunities within one’s chosen profession.
  • Engage in reflective practices to evaluate one’s own learning in this course and apply that learning to other areas of experience, both academic and professional.
Notes
A grade below a C- is considered a failure, and the student should follow the Repeat Course policy.
