FY 101 - First-Year Experience (FYE) Seminar


Credits: 1

First Year Experience Seminar, is a one-credit course required of all first-year students.  FY 101 is designed to support and guide Saint Joseph’s College of Maine incoming first-year students to all aspects of college life as they transition to their first semester in college. The seminar will help students acclimate to the academic requirements and expectations of their program of study, help students negotiate campus life and the SJC community, and direct students to resources available for academic or individual support. 

The course emphasizes: academic proficiency; the mission and the values of Saint Joseph’s College of Maine; support networks and transition to college life; application of social and cultural awareness; academic and career exploration; and self-discovery activities and lessons. This is a personal development course focusing on academic success and the development of related living skills that go beyond the academic environment.

FY 101 also helps to emphasize the importance of developing one’s own leadership and professional skills, as it pertains to the classroom setting and beyond. All topics covered in the course, in addition to the objectives of the course, revolve around providing first students the confidence to make their own decisions and to take responsibility for their education. 

Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to do the following: 

  • Enhance the essential academic skills of incoming students.
  • Direct students to academic and support resources on campus.
  • Facilitate the transition of incoming students to Saint Joseph’s College of Maine environment.
  • Immerse students in campus opportunities, events, and SJC culture.
  • Develop and utilize critical life skills necessary for success in and out of the classroom. 
  • Help foster relationships between their peers, faculty, and staff.
