BI 406 - Seminar and Research Thesis

Credits: 4

A culminating program for senior majors. Participants select their field of interest, read background literature, submit a research proposal and conduct original research. The results of the study are presented by means of seminars, discussions, and a formal scientific thesis. This year-long program allows students the opportunity to use their cumulative knowledge in the investigation of a biological problem, and to present and defend their ideas in seminar and thesis form.

Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to do the following: 

  • Familiar with professional journals and the types of articles they contain.
  • Able to effectively and confidently research the scientific literature.
  • Able to plan a research project (to be conducted over the summer or in the following semester as part of BI 407), including a list of materials needed.
  • Competent at writing a scientific proposal in the style of the experimental field.
  • Able to orally present research data and interpretation in a formal setting.
