EH 222 - Detective Stories to SF Tales (SR)


Credits: 4 credits

This course takes an in-depth approach to “genre literature” (such as detective fiction, Westerns, and science fiction stories) through an examination of significant works in a number of different literary categories. Students analyze these works and their themes with particular attention to ethical and moral issues the stories raise.

This is a Sustainability-Related (SR)  course.

Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Analyze and interpret genre literature, including its purpose, method, and ethical/moral dimensions;
  2. Conduct literary research using a variety of critical perspectives and apply that research to both written and oral communications
  3. Describe and discuss genre literature;
  4. Identify, describe, and discuss ethical and political issues in, and surrounding, genre literature and its criticism 
  5. Demonstrate good communication skills, revealed in both writing and speaking.
