ED 110 - Foundations of Literacy (SR)


Credits: (4 credits)

Today’s students are tomorrow’s decision-makers, independent of their ultimate careers, it will be their decisions that collectively decide the fate of our planet.  This course will examine theories and processes related to the development of oral language and literacy skills in elementary school and implications for instruction.

This is a Sustainability-Related (SR)  course.

Prerequisite/Corequisite

Prerequisite:ED 100  

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to do the following:

  1. Identify and define the all of the language arts of elementary school.
  2. Identify and evaluate theories of oral language, reading, and writing acquisition.
  3. Describe oral language and literacy development from early to advanced skills.
  4. Describe and apply instructional strategies for teaching oral language and literacy skills.
  5. Differentiate instructional strategies for teaching oral language and literacy skills to diverse students, including English language learners.
  6. Apply principles and practices of formal and informal assessment of oral language an literacy.
  7. Create plans and materials that apply language arts standards, instructional strategies and assessment procedures.
