HIM 330 - Advanced Health Data Management


This course provides an understanding of health data structure, content, and acquisition.  It also defines health care information systems, requirements and standards, and integrates an overview of how clinical classification systems are used in health care delivery and reimbursement.

Course Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this course, you should be able to do the following:

  • Understand health data structure, content and standards.
  • Manage health data.
  • Ensure that documentation in the health record supports the diagnosis and reflects the patients progress, clinical findings, and discharge status.
  • Develop organization-wide health record documentation guidelines.
  • Maintain organizational compliance with regulations and standards.
  • Ensure organizational survey readiness for accreditation, licensing and/or certification process.
  • Design and implement clinical documentation initiatives.
  • Submit, implement, and manage electronic applications for clinical classification and coding.
  • Maintain processes, policies, and procedures to ensure the accuracy of coded data.
  • Apply knowledge of database architecture and design.
  • Monitor use of clinical vocabularies and terminologies used in the organization’s health information systems
  • Manage clinical indices, databases, and registries.
  • Apply appropriate electronic or imaging technology for data/record storage.
