DB 305 - Database Administration


This course provides comprehensive coverage of generally accepted database administration functions and practices and examines some of the common challenges and problems that arise in day-to-day operations. This course introduces a variety of database administration topics, including capacity planning, database management system (DBMS) architecture, performance tuning, backup, recovery and disaster planning, archiving, reorganization, and defragmentation.

Course Learning Objectives
Upon completing this course, you should be able to do the following: 

  • Identify and describe a DBA’s job responsibility and eight different types of Database Administrators. 
  • Explain the storage, hardware and memory components of a DBMS architecture.
  • Identify, explain and demonstrate system, application and database performance tuning.
  • Identify, explain and demonstrate proactive and reactive performance management.
  • Identify and explain various backup types and how to apply various backups to reduce the risk of data loss.
  • Identify and explain the steps required to restore a database from different backup types.
  • Identify, explain and apply best practices to database reorganization and defragmentation.
  • Explain the importance of a disaster plan and some important guidelines when creating a disaster plan. Demonstrate the ability to analyze and rank databases into groups based on organizational risk or impact for a disaster recovery plan.
  • Identify common failures that impact database availability.
  • Identify the need for capacity planning and demonstrate how to measure database capacity.
  • Identify database security basics and demonstrate the ability to issue Data Control Language (DCL) statements to ensure database security.
