CS 300 - IS Security Fundamentals


This course is designed to teach the fundamentals of information assurance and security in computing technology. The course provides a survey of the fundamentals of information security, which include; risks and vulnerabilities, policy formation, controls and protection methods, database security, encryption, authentication technologies, host-based and network-based security, personnel and physical security, and issues of law and privacy.

Course Learning Objectives
Upon completing this course, you should be able to do the following:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of the history, characteristics and components of information security.
  • Identify and prioritize information assets and threats to those assets.
  • Define an information security strategy and architecture.
  • Identify, plan for and respond to intruders in an information system.
  • Identify various industry standards and organizations in the security field.
  • Describe legal, ethical and public relations implications of security and privacy issues.
  • Describe risk management and present a disaster recovery plan for recovery of information assets after an incident.
