HIM 340 - Information and Communication Technologies


This course provides an overview of the technology used to facilitate communication and manage information in health care organizations for the purpose of data collection, storage, analysis, and retrieval of information. You will study the design and implementation of electronic health records, personal health records, and other health care administrative applications, as well as the risks and benefits of integrated health information networks. You will also be able to describe the use of standards to achieve interoperability of health care records. This course is intended to meet the CAHIIM competencies/knowledge clusters of Domains IV.A through IV.C.

Course Learning Objectives
Upon completing this course, you should be able to do the following:

  • Implement and manage the use of technology, including hardware and software to ensure data collection, storage, analysis, and reporting of information.
  • Contribute to the development of networks, including Intranet and Internet applications to facilitate the electronic health record (EHR), personal health record (PHR), public health, and other administrative applications.
  • Interpret the use of standards to achieve interoperability of health care information systems.
