NU 506 - Nursing Leadership


This course includes a focus on theories, concepts and principles of leading and managing as well as pertinent legal issues faced by nursing leaders and managers.  Emphasis will be on the methods used to become an effective leader/manager including interpersonal skills needed for effective leadership and management, the different types of organizations delivering health care, outcomes management and analysis of current research findings.  Each unit of content focuses on a different issue confronting the nursing leader in current practice.

Upon completion of this course, you should be able to do the following:

  • Classify leadership and management principles and theories appropriate for different types of organizations delivering health care.
  • Assess the impact of organizational structures, mission, and philosophy on leadership and management processes in nursing.
  • Evaluate the impact of relevant research on leadership and management.
  • Explain control mechanisms, quality assurance, and quality-improvement processes that focus on outcomes.
  • Analyze legal and ethical issues relevant to nursing and health care with respect to the impact on leadership and management in nursing.
  • Examine the role and responsibilities of the nurse leader/manager in the development, management, and use of human resources.
