A Joint Program of Saint Joseph’s College of Maine and Gratz College, Elkins Park, Pennsylvania.

“When she delves into her own mystery, the Church, the People of God in the New Covenant, discovers her link with the Jewish People, “the first to hear the Word of God” (Catechism of the Catholic Church [CCC], para. 839).

A knowledge of Judaism greatly increases one’s comprehension and appreciation of Christianity. To this end, Saint Joseph’s College of Maine has partnered with Gratz College to offer students of all faiths the opportunity to learn both Judaism and Christanity from believing, practicing Jews and Catholic Christians. The program delves into the theology and liturgy of each faith community, noting points of convergence and divergence, in a spirit of mutual respect and dignity. Upon completion of this certificate, students will gain the following:

  • A deeper understanding of Jewish and Christian beliefs and practices;
  • A broader knowledge of the relationship between Judaism and Christianity;
  • A greater appreciation for the importance of Jewish-Christian dialogue.

The certificate consists of 18 credits, 9 from each institution. Students register for courses directly with the institution offering each course. Saint Joseph’s College students registering for Gratz College courses should contact Dr. Ayal Feinberg (afeinberg@gratz.edu).

Gratz College has the distinction of being the oldest pluralistic college for Jewish Studies in North America. It welcomes students from all backgrounds and religious traditions, while maintaining its commitment to the principle of “education grounded in Jewish values.” As a pluralistic institution, Gratz does not identify with a particular Jewish ideology or movement. With its scholarly and experienced faculty, Gratz is rooted in history and tradition, as well as focused on the future of Jewish education. Its programs range from a thriving Jewish Community High School to a highly regarded doctoral program in Jewish education.
