Health and Wellness Promotion, B.S. Pre-Occupational Therapy Track

Students enrolled in the Health and Wellness Promotion/Pre-Occupational Therapy major complete the Health and Wellness Promotion curriculum and through a combination of required and elective courses, complete the required coursework for application to Occupational Therapy graduate degree programs.

Students must achieve a minimum grade of “C” in these courses:  BI210, BI211, MA205, PY101, PY211, PY308, and SO201.

Students are required to maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher by the end of their sophomore year to remain in Pre-OT curriculum. ​

Maine Occupational Therapy programs generally require a minimum 3.0 overall GPA and a C or better (some require a B or better) in pre-requisite courses, however GPA’s of accepted students is usually much higher.

Completing this degree program will enable students to:

  • Demonstrate competence in assessing needs, planning, implementing, managing and evaluating health promotion programs.
  • Understand and demonstrate professional ethics and social responsibility as it relates to the practice of health promotion.
  • Communicate effectively and professionally in verbal, nonverbal, and written formats.
  • Use critical thinking skills to solve problems associated with assessing needs, implementing, managing and evaluating health promotion programs.
  • Engage in career development activities to prepare for graduate school entrance in occupational therapy (MOT, OTD).

Core Curriculum:


In addition, all students must fulfill the college’s core curriculum  requirements and meet the 120 credit graduation requirement.  The First Year Experience (FYE) Seminar  is a requirement for all first-year students.

Notes:


  • Most programs in Maine require or highly recommend some combination of the following courses - it is recommended that students fill electives with any additional pre-requisites at their desired institution(s): Neuroscience (PY320), Medical Terminology (HM210 online), and Physics (PC120).
  • In addition to HWP required courses (BI120, BI211, MA205, PY101), all MOT programs in Maine require Principles of Sociology (SO201), Lifespan Development (PY211), or Human Growth & Development (PY212), Abnormal Psychology or Psychopathology (PY308).
  • Most MOT programs require observation/volunteer hours (HE410 - Internship)
  • Any student that does not achieve a “C” or better in all required courses will continue their degree completion in the Health and Wellness Promotion program.
