Interdisciplinary Studies (AS): Adult Education & Training Minor

Interdisciplinary Studies (IDS)

The Associate of Science, Interdisciplinary Studies (AS, IDS) program provides exciting opportunities for students to explore perspectives within and across programs. Rather than be limited to one discipline, IDS students get to challenge boundaries and expand worldviews. Students choose one minor for the Associate of Science, IDS. The AS, IDS general education requirements are compatible for transfer in fulfillment of some of the Bachelor of Science, IDS general education requirements. Upon successful completion of this minor and other degree requirements, students will obtain the Associate of Science, Interdisciplinary Studies. 

IDS, Adult Education & Training minor

The Adult Education & Training minor is designed for students who are interested in developing the skills and knowledge to teach/organize training programs at the adult and/or corporate level. In this minor, students will explore the unique learning styles and preferences of adults, as well as enhance their understanding of strategies on engaging learners. They will also have opportunities to design, develop, and deliver training plans and learn about some of the newest approaches in the field of adult learning.

Program outcomes for the AS, IDS are as follows:

  • Acquire various bodies of knowledge and competencies, and deepen insight within and across academic disciplines.
  • Demonstrate critical writing, thinking, calculating, and communication proficiencies.
  • Critique and integrate varying worldviews across fields of study.
  • Understand the foundation of ethical and professional standards, including those specific to areas of study.
  • Develop a foundation for lifelong learning.
  • Obtain the credential or degree needed to advance or enter professional careers.

 

General Education Requirements: A.S.


The Leadership for Sustainable Communities (LSC) core is driven by its learning outcomes. LSC core learning outcomes are built on the premise that all graduates of Saint Joseph’s College of Maine (SJC) have the foundation to become leaders in creating a sustainable future. More specifically, we organize the LSC core learning outcomes around three areas:

  1. Development of Knowledge: Foundational Inquiry & Skills
  2. Sustainability of Communities and the Planet 
  3. Personal Growth & Professional Development

Moreover, the general education curriculum supports several of SJC’s Institutional Learning Outcomes.  Specifically:

  • Identify and apply the ethical and moral dimensions of their particular field of study;
  • Demonstrate effective communication skills in both written and oral formats;
  • Engage in responsible citizenship, social justice, and environmental stewardship;
  • Demonstrate critical thinking skills and the ability to analyze and evaluate information from diverse sources and perspectives.
Online General Education Requirements (24 Credits) - Associate Degree programs
Development of Knowledge: Foundational Inquiry and Skills (Credits: 15)
  • 3 Credits of Introductory Theology – any 100 level TH course
  • 3 Credits of Humanities (PH or HY) 
  • 6 Credits of English  (EH 106 & EH 107 or Equivalents) 
  • 3 Credits of Mathematics

Sustainability of Communities and the Planet (Credits: 6)

  • 3 Credits in Social or Behavioral Sciences (This could include: HA205, MG302, MG309)
  • 3 Credits in Natural Sciences
Self Growth & Professional Developments (Credits: 3)
