English B.A.

The English major further develops students’  writing, critical reasoning, and interpretive and research skills. The major features a rich and varied curriculum rooted in the classics yet reflective of the changing world. The Bachelor of Arts in English requires two semesters of the same foreign language.

Upon satisfactory completion of the English B.A., the student will be able to :

  • demonstrate good communication skills, revealed in both writing and speaking
  • analyze and interpret literature, including its purpose, method, and ethical/moral dimensions
  • describe and discuss his/her appreciation of literature
  • describe and discuss canonical and non-canonical world literature
  • conduct literary research using a variety of critical perspectives and apply that research to both written and oral communications
  • employ the creative imagination to produce original work (written, audio, and/or visual)
  • interact creatively, in various artistic forms (including but not limited to creative writing), with both classical and contemporary literature in ways that demonstrate intellectual, spiritual, and aesthetic engagement in the create process.

In addition to courses required for the major, all English majors must select a literature or writing focus.

Core Curriculum:


In addition, all students must fulfill the college’s core curriculum  requirements and meet the 120 credit graduation requirement.  The First Year Experience (FYE) Seminar  is a requirement for all first-year students.
