In keeping with the values of Saint Joseph’s College, rooted in the teachings of Jesus Christ and the doctrines and heritage of the Catholic Church, the Division of Graduate & Professional Studies is proud to offer quality, accredited degrees in theological and pastoral studies.

The Bachelor of Arts in Theological Studies enables students to:

  • acquire knowledge in theological studies;
  • deepen and strengthen personal faith;
  • learn skills applicable to Church ministry;
  • develop skills for independent inquiry and life-long learning;
  • prepare a foundation for entry into the Master of Arts in Pastoral Theology program.

Its eight Student Learning Outcomes are as follows:

Upon completion of this program of study leading to graduation, the student shall:

  • understand and appreciate the books of the Old Testament and the New Testament; understand the historical and social contexts of the writings; recognized their literary forms according to appropriate historical-critical methodologies; and place them in their ecclesial context;
  • understand and appreciate Catholic doctrine and theology, including the doctrines of the Trinity, Christology, ecclesiology, Christian anthropology, and eschatology;
  • understand and appreciate liturgical and sacramental theology and the life of worship in the Church;
  • understand and appreciate the history of the Church, including both positive and negative dimensions;
  • understand and appreciate the foundations of moral theology and the social doctrine of the Church;
  • understand and appreciate the guiding principles for the practice of ministry;
  • understand and appreciate the foundations of Catholic spirituality which include the history of Christian religious experience and the types and schools of spirituality;
  • be prepared to enter, or to continue, an effective ministry of service to the Church and society.

General Education Requirements, BA


The Bachelor of Arts in Theological Studies consists of 128 credit hours of which 36 credit hours (12 courses) are in the major area – 7 required core courses and 5 electives.

General Elective Courses


Additional courses (electives) to complete the required 128 semester-hour credits may be selected from any of the course offerings described in the catalog.

Summer Program


Students may choose to earn credits during a residential summer session. Course offerings are announced prior to each session in a special summer catalog.
