MS 103 - Physical and Biological Oceanography


Credits: (4 credits)

Emphasis is on processes that occur within the water column and above the sea bed in both coastal and open ocean regions. The course examines the relationship between ocean circulation and how life in the ocean is sustained. Also discussed is the role of the ocean in global climate change and the precarious situation of the world’s fisheries and marine mammals. Considerable attention will be directed to the biological and physical oceanography of the Gulf of Maine and the human impact on this region. Field activities along the coast, laboratory activities and student research projects comprise the laboratory component of this course.

Notes
This course is open to all science majors. Non-science majors must have permission of instructor.
