BI 350 - Evolution

Credits: 4

The scientific study of evolution includes the process of microevolution – the change of allele frequencies in a population across generations, as well as macroevolution – the pattern of relatedness among taxonomic groups at the species level or above. This course emphasizes the study of the four drivers of evolution, including a conceptual and quantitative approach to understanding how these mechanisms effect evolutionary change. The course takes an interactive approach, incorporating hands on activities, and it allows students to direct some of the curricular coverage later in the semester, once the foundations of the understanding of evolution have been laid.

Prerequisite/Corequisite
Prerequisite(s): BI 120 & BI 121

Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, you should be able to do the following:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the molecular basis of evolution and explain how it contributes to micro- and macro-evolution, in both written and oral formats.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of mechanisms of evolutionary change (Natural Selection, Mutation, Genetic Drift, Gene Flow) and how they interact.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of evolutionary modeling including the Hardy-Weinberg Equilibrium Model.
  • Critically read and evaluate scientific literature.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the scientific method & testable hypotheses.
  • Interpret population genetic and evolutionary character-based data sets and propose conclusions supported by the scientific method.
  • Apply their understanding of evolution to human and environmental dilemmas.
  • Explain the significance of evolution in science education & society.
  • Analyze and interpret population genetic data and describe how this can be applied to management and conservation of wild species, pathogens, and food crops.
