HPS 202 - International Relations


Credits: 3

Examines different social, economic and cultural factors which have given rise to the unique political institutions in several selected countries. An effort will be made to examine the ties between the developed and developing countries.

Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, you should be able to do the following:

  • Identify key historical forces and events that have shaped the current international system.
  • Attain basic geographic literacy of the nation-state system.
  • Attain foundational knowledge of international relations, including themes of: conflict and war; international organizations; international law; international trade and finance; international development, and international engagement with environmental degradation.
  • Evaluate different theoretical orientations employed by the discipline.
  • Assess the role that nation-states, international organizations, nongovernmental organization, and norms play in the international system.
  • Apply basic international economic concepts. 
  • Hypothesize how best to solve prominent 21st challenges in the international system.
