NU 105 - Introduction to Professional Nursing (CBL-R)
Credits: 3 (theory)
This course introduces students to the nursing profession and contemporary healthcare. Students examine nursing as a profession and a career with a focus on core healthcare professional competencies. The core competencies of a patient-centered care; teamwork and collaboration; evidence-based practice; quality improvement; safety, and informatics are explored in relation to nursing.
This is a Community-Based Learning - Required (CBL-R) course.
Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, you should be able to do the following:
- Demonstrate an appreciation of the history of and contemporary issues in nursing and their impact on current nursing practice.
- Demonstrate an awareness of complex organizational systems.
- Describe the interrelationships among theory, practice, and research.
- Demonstrate effective communication techniques.
- Describe inter- and intraprofessional communication and collaborative skills including negotiation and conflict resolution.
- Explain the role of the nurse in assessing the health/illness beliefs, values, attitude, and practices of individuals families, groups, communities, and populations.
- Identify and discuss the professional standards of moral, ethical, and legal conduct for professional nurses.
- Explore telecommunication technologies to assist in effective communication in a variety of healthcare settings.
- Discuss the impact of socio-cultural, economic, legal, and political factors that influence healthcare delivery and nursing practice.
- Assume responsibility for personal and professional behaviors.
