ES 215 - Limnology (SF)


Credits: 4

Introduction to the study of lakes. Emphasis is placed on the interplay among chemical, physical, geological, and biological components of lacustrine systems. Much of the course involves field-oriented studies of Sebago Lake, a large glacial ice-scour lake adjacent to Saint Joseph’s campus.

This is a Sustainability-Focused (SF)  course.

Prerequisite/Corequisite
Prerequisites: ES 100, BI 120, and CH 130/CH 131 (or CH 120).

Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, you should be able to do the following:

  • Describe the effects of physical/chemical processes on lake biota.
  • Describe the varied ecosystem services provided to society by freshwater systems.
  • Understand threats to lake systems from habitat alteration and climate change.
  • Demonstrate competence in research study methods for lake ecosystems.
